The short answer
IPTV means Internet Protocol Television: live TV channels delivered over your internet connection instead of a coaxial cable, an aerial or a satellite dish. You install a player app on a device you own, sign in with credentials from a provider, and the channel list appears. No dish, no installer, no rented box — but also no immunity from a bad connection.
The words you will meet
Most confusion about IPTV is vocabulary rather than technology. Here is the whole glossary in one place.
| Term | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| IPTV | Live TV over the internet rather than cable, aerial or satellite |
| M3U | A plain text list of channels and stream addresses, handed to you as one long URL |
| Xtream Codes | An API: three fields instead of one URL, which also brings the guide and the library. Full guide |
| EPG | Electronic Programme Guide — the seven-day TV schedule inside your player |
| VOD | Video On Demand — the films and series library you start whenever you like |
| Catch-up | Programmes that already aired, kept a few days, so the guide works backwards |
| Connection | One simultaneous stream. Two people watching different things need two |
| Player | The app that logs in and draws everything — TiviMate, Smarters, IBO |
| MAG | A dedicated set-top box that uses a portal address instead of an app |
| Enigma2 | Linux receivers (Dreambox, Vu+) that use their own bouquet files |
| H.264 / H.265 | Video codecs. H.265 fits 4K into less bandwidth, but needs a device that can decode it |
How IPTV differs from the two things people compare it to
Against cable and satellite
A broadcast signal is pushed to everyone at once and does not care what else is happening on your network. IPTV is fetched by your device over a connection shared with every phone, console and laptop in the house. That is the single real trade-off: no dish, no installer, no two-year contract and far more channels — in exchange for depending on your own connection.
Against Netflix, Prime and the rest
Streaming apps are on-demand catalogues with almost no live TV, each with its own subscription. IPTV is primarily live channels, with an on-demand library alongside, on one login. If what you miss about cable is flipping to a live game or the evening news, that is the gap IPTV fills and the apps do not.
What you need
- A connection. Roughly 10 Mbps for HD, 15 for Full HD, 25 for 4K — per screen. Stability matters more than headline speed.
- A device. Fire TV Stick, Smart TV, Android box, Apple TV, phone, tablet, PC or MAG. Almost certainly something you already own.
- A player app. See best IPTV app for which suits your device.
- Credentials from a provider — Xtream Codes details or an M3U URL.
The trade-offs nobody mentions in an ad
- Your connection is now part of your TV. A router that drops for ten seconds once an evening was invisible before and is not any more.
- Live streams run behind the broadcast — typically 10 to 40 seconds, including on the networks’ own official apps. Anyone promising zero delay is not being straight with you.
- Channel line-ups change. Feeds are added, renamed and occasionally disappear. Any honest provider tells you this.
- Not every channel is 4K, whatever the marketing says. Most are Full HD, because that is what broadcasters produce.
- Quality depends on the hour. A service sized too small is perfect on Tuesday morning and useless on Sunday afternoon.
None of these are reasons not to use IPTV. They are the things to weigh, and a provider willing to state them is more trustworthy than one claiming perfection.
Is it right for your household?
Good fit: you have a stable connection, you watch live sport or news, you want international channels, and your cable bill irritates you.
Poor fit: your internet drops regularly, you only watch four local channels, or nobody in the house will tolerate the occasional glitch of any streaming service.
Be honest on the first point especially. No provider can fix an unreliable connection, and we would rather say so before you pay than after.
